Looking for Something Different in New Orleans? Try a Pirate Tour

Group listens to costumed guide by a historic cannon in New Orleans.

New Orleans isn’t a city people visit to do the ordinary.

You can find great restaurants, beautiful hotels and museums in cities all over the world. But one of the reasons people come to New Orleans is to experience something they simply can’t find anywhere else.

And if you’re looking for unique things to do in New Orleans, you might want to spend a couple of hours with the pirates.

A New Orleans Experience You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

Pirates of the Quarter isn’t a traditional walking tour with a pirate theme added to it.

Pirates, smugglers and privateers are actually part of the history of New Orleans.

In the early 1800s, Jean Lafitte and the Baratarians operated an enormous smuggling network just outside the city. Their goods found their way into New Orleans shops and homes. Their men walked these streets, drank in its taverns and did business with some of its citizens.

Then, during the War of 1812, some of those same men helped defend New Orleans alongside Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans.

That’s the world we explore.

History Where It Actually Happened

One of the things that makes New Orleans different from almost anywhere else in America is that so much of its history is still standing around you.

Our New Orleans pirate tour takes place in the French Quarter, where the stories aren’t separated from their setting.

We walk the streets. We stand in the alleys. We talk about the people who lived here, the deals that were made here and the events that helped shape the city.

This isn’t a story that could simply be picked up and moved to another destination.

New Orleans is part of the experience.

Not the Pirate History You Think You Know

Forget buried treasure, parrots and people yelling “Arrr!”

The real history is better.

The pirates and smugglers connected to New Orleans were merchants, sailors, businessmen, criminals, adventurers and survivors operating in a city where French, Spanish, American, Caribbean and African cultures collided.

Their story involves smuggling, politics, war, money, slavery, corruption and the constant question of exactly where the line between legitimate businessman and criminal was drawn.

Sometimes that line was surprisingly thin.

Our tours are built around that real history while remembering one very important thing:

You’re on vacation. This should be fun.

Looking for Something a Little More Adult?

For those who prefer their history with a drink in hand, there’s our New Orleans pirate pub crawl.

The idea isn’t simply to move from bar to bar.

We combine the atmosphere of the French Quarter, its drinking culture, its history and its characters into an experience designed specifically for New Orleans.

It’s part history, part storytelling, part night out—and something considerably different from the typical Bourbon Street bar crawl.

The Best Souvenirs Aren’t Always Things

There’s nothing wrong with buying the T-shirt. We happen to sell quite a few of them.

But years after a trip, the things people tend to remember aren’t always the things they bought.

They’re the stories.

The strange little street they discovered. The person they met. The bar they never would have found. The thing they did that they couldn’t have done back home.

That’s the kind of experience we want to create.

So if you’re searching for unique things to do in the French Quarter, an authentic New Orleans experience, or simply something different from the usual attractions, come spend a little time with the pirates.

After all, there are plenty of places where you can take a tour.

There’s only one New Orleans.
